Accessibility
Last updated: 3 November 2026
We want every tool on this site to work with a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom and high contrast. Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We are not there yet, and we do not claim the site meets that standard. This page says what was tested, what we changed and what still falls short.
What was tested, and when
On 3 November 2026, Rule Signals tested nine pages: the home page, HEIC to PNG, CSV to ICS, VCF to CSV, the ChatGPT export viewer, the MBOX converter comparison, Writing, Pro and About. Rule Signals is an accessibility testing service owned by the same person who owns StaysPrivate. The testing was automated and AI-assisted: axe-core scans, a keyboard-only walk through each page, a check of headings, labels and landmarks, and checks at 320 pixels wide and in dark mode. A person still has to review those results, and a screen-reader test is still to come.
What we changed on 3 November 2026
- The "Drop files here" boxes now work from the keyboard. Before, they only opened with a mouse, so nobody using a keyboard could load a file into any tool.
- Darker green links, so link text has enough contrast in light mode.
- Links inside text are underlined, so they don't rely on colour alone.
- The top menu wraps on narrow screens instead of running off the edge.
- Results are announced to screen readers, for example "3 contacts converted", without moving your focus.
- The license key box on the Pro page has a visible label.
- In the ChatGPT and Gemini viewers, conversation titles are now buttons, so you can open a conversation from the keyboard.
- This page. There was no accessibility information before.
The other tool pages share the same layout and drop box, so they got the same changes, but they were not part of that test.
Problems we know about
- PDFs made by EML to PDF and MBOX to PDF are pictures of the pages. A screen reader cannot read them, and you cannot select or search their text. If you need the text, use the MBOX tool's EML export, or open the original email in your mail app.
- No screen-reader test yet. Until it is done, we cannot say how well each tool works with NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver.
- The changes above have not been re-tested yet. A re-test is planned.
- The Timeline viewer's map is a drawing. The list under it gives the same places and times as text.
- Pro checkout runs in Paddle's payment window, which we don't control. If it doesn't work for you, email us.
Using the tools with a keyboard
- Tab and Shift + Tab move between links, buttons and boxes.
- To choose a file, Tab to the "Drop … here" box and press Enter or Space. Your system's file chooser opens. Dragging files is never required.
- Enter or Space presses a button, Enter follows a link, Space ticks a checkbox, and the arrow keys change a drop-down menu.
- Questions in the FAQ open and close with Enter or Space.
- Tables wider than the screen can be reached with Tab and scrolled with the arrow keys.
- ChatGPT and Gemini viewers: each conversation title is a button. Press Enter to show that conversation under the list.
- Timeline viewer: the ‹ and › buttons step through the days that have data, and you can type a date into the date box.
Screen readers
Each page has one main heading, section headings and the usual header, main and footer regions. Messages such as "Reading export…" or "12 events created" are announced as they appear, without moving your focus.
